HISTORY

Carlinville is named for Illinois Governor Thomas Carlin, who was instrumental in helping to create Macoupin County in 1829. The city has long been a historic site hosting many presidential hopefuls on their campaigns. Christian County, IL was formed in 1839, the same year Taylorville was established. Much of Taylorville’s early development remains within the 23 blocks of downtown that are on the National Register of Historic Places.
